; $VER: Symphonie Quickstart 2.11a
-------------------------------
Symphonie PRO - Quickstart
-------------------------------
Symphonie PRO is a 100% 16 Bit program.
Symphonie Pro performs on standard Amigas rates upto max 240 kHz
(much more than CD !)
Symphonie Pro performs on standard Amigas 14 Bit Sound (ca 84dB)
(a tiny bit under CD)
CD quality may NOT be high enough(!) to show you the quality of Symphonie.
(e.g. DSP songs are reported to need at least 52 Khz to be smooth)
Users with slow cpu's may not be able to do realtime rendering at 250 kHz,
but you can still RENDER to hd at 250 kHz (even with a 68EC020)
Symphonie Pro can already understand lots of 16 Bit formats, and there
are more to come.
Symphonie is 100% non destructive (Samples)
Symphonie runs on A1200/A4000 and on Amigas with turboboard + OS3.0/3.1
8 Bit Modules are not capable of showing the full power of 16 Bit Symphonie.
----------------------------------------------------------------
IF YOU HAVE SYMPHONIE PRO, THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY ANY SOUNDCARD
UNLESS YOU ARE A CD PRODUCTION CENTER OR ANYTHING SIMILAR.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Symphonie is very complex and may be too new to be understood by everyone
so, here follow some hints:
Symphonie is too slow ?
---------------------
If you want the same high quality sound, there is NO WAY in doing it faster.
Its simply impossible to do it faster without reducing quality.
Symphonie has been designed from the beginning to be very adjustable in manners
of speed, quality, and cpu power use.
BEST IS: If you buy a faster cpu you DO get higher audio quality TOO !!!!
Deep screenmodes may slow down your CPU (2 colors = fastest, 256 colors = slowest)
Slow graphics update ?
--------------------
If Symphonie is running the priorities look like this:
1. Blitter is set to low priority (if CPU is active, blitter has to wait)
2. Symphonie Audio System gets all CPU time needed.
3. If there is any time left, it is shared between OS and Symphonie GFX autoupdate system.
Symphonie is using a multiwindow system (OS slows down GFX access)
Symphonie does only use OS blitting routines (no custom blitting used, as in most other trackers)
Symphonie is capable of running on graphiccards (Most other trackers cannot, or crash !)
How can I get maximum quality ?
-----------------------------
(0. reset your machine to clean up memory fragmentation)
1. Make sure you select a 30Khz screen mode (e.g. Euro72Hz, Multiscan ...)
or you will NEVER EVER be able to play higher rates than 28Khz
2. Select Audio Mode 14 Bit, (Oversampling 14 Bit for low power users)
3. Load your desired module
4. NOW set the System buffers to MAXIMUM(255), Symphonie will verify
and reduce the buffer number to the maximum possible for a certain bpm.
(always remember: If there are no large fastmem chunks symphonie
may take chipmem instead -> symphonie gets slower )
How to get maximum Speed ? (Symphonie Pro only)
------------------------
If you like high quality set PREFS:SYSTEM/MAX PROC VOL to 99.
If you like high Speed set PREFS:SYSTEM/MAX CALC VOL to 49.
- Symphonie plays all Samples above 49% Volume at 100%)
- CPU is 30% to 50% faster !
Surrouond
---------
Existing Modules may produce "interesting" FX if played on a
Surround Decoder.
Two Ways exist to create Surround Sound (Phase Shift 180°)
1. Sample based : Invert Sample by using |I| Operation.
(Hint: Load a Stereo(!) Sample and invert one Part
or do a "Virtuel Clone".)
2. Channel based : Use Negative Values on Channel Volume (Seq: |CV| command)
(e.g. "CV:=-100%" does a 180° Phaseshift on all Samples
played on a certain track)
There is a strange delay while playing over the keyboard
--------------------------------------------------------
For realtime performance you should reduce the MENU:Prefs/System/System Buffer
to 8. But for playing songs you ought to put System Buffers as high as possible !!!
There is disturbance because the sound is too loud
--------------------------------------------------
Decrease MENU:Prefs/s. Preprocessor/Sampleboost by 10 and RELOAD(!) the module
If a certain song does use DSP then the sound may be louder than a song not using
the DSP (general rule)
Standard values:
Sampleboost
-----------
8 Channel module : 100%
12 Channel module : 175%- 200%
16 Channel module : 125%- 150%
8 Channel mod/DSP : 60%- 80%
16 Channel mod/DSP : 100%- 150%
The Mousepointer does freeze while playing !
------------------------------------------
Press both Mousebuttons and Symphonie will STOP immediately
(keep them pressed for some secs if you use long buffering)
This is only the case, if you let your cpu run a the limits of its power.
If you want fast multitasking you are to reduce the mix quality (Freq)
If you want best quality you have to heighten mix quality.
14 BIT = 16 BIT ?
---------------
The Render quality with a soundcard is of course much better than over
Amiga's Paula chip. Moreover Soundcards may also have multiple postoversampling
reducing noise even more.
A lot of DSP FX sounding noisy on 14 Bit may sound very clear with a 16 Bit soundcard
16 Bit ist not enough if you work with 16 Bit Samples (16Bitx256Channels=2x23Bit),
but due to non destructive Sample handling, there is no loss of quality.
"Work Today with 16 Bit in Symphonie Jr(!), render your work Tomorrow with 32 Bit."
256 Channels ?
------------
Beware of going to 256 Channel mode (unless you have at least 10 MB of memory )
If there is an out of memory error (Symphonie quits at once), decrease
the number of patterns from 64 to 1 and retry.
(256 Channel mode needs 64K per pattern)
Samples ?
-------
All Samples are handled non destructive (No quality loss in any way)
Symphonie is the first Sequencer to support: (You don't have to convert anything)
16 Bit Wave Samples (found on PCs)
16 Bit iff Samples (MAUD)
16 Bit Maestro Samples created with Samplitude (the leading Sampling Software for Amigas)
of course in Mono and Stereo....
Symphonie supports multiple (-XPK-) packed Samples.
SYMPHONIE JR SUPPORTS 16BIT SAMPLES TOO, W I T H O U T CONVERTING THEM TO NOISY 8BIT (!!)
(Most other trackers cannot handle them without converting !)
Multisamples is a must to be supported in the Future, if you own any
16 Bit Samples, feel free to send them on PC0.720-1440 or AMIGA 880-2000 Disks,
including a Detailed Description of the Format (!).
(The 2 or 3 most popular Formats will be taken under further investigation)
Modules ?
-------
If you want some more modules ask Marco Ege. He is musician.
If you like the Demo modules don't tell me, tell Marco Ege instead !
If you'd like sound rendered in 16 Bit ask Marco Ege for demo tapes.
(requests for CDs may be interesting too, as CDs get cheaper every day)
See the guide for more details...
16 Bit Sound in Multimedia, Games and Demos ?
-------------------------------------------
Multimedia: No Problem, use rendered Modules
CD Games: Use rendered 16 Bit Modules as CD-Audio Tracks
Non CD Games/Demos: A - Produce Rendered files for ingame load (HD space needed)
- Symphonie System not needed for Realtime performance
Non CD Games/Demos: B - Must have a Slider Gadget (Audio Quality vs Game Speed)
- Must allow Symphonie to use 1 Audio irq, 1 timer irq
- Multitasking is not needed
- you may use the 16 Bit Symphonie System for ingame SFX (!)
--------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------
WARNING:
IF YOU ADJUST THE MONITOR FREQS YOUR MONITOR MAY BLOW UP.!!!
IF YOU DONT BE CAREFULL WITH THE DSP SECTION YOUR SPEAKERS/MONITORS
MAY BLOW UP WITH EASE. YOUR AMPLIFIER MAY BE DESTROYED TOO !!!
IF SYMPHONIE IS ACTIVE THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS IN A SPECIAL UNEXPECTED
STATE, DUE TO HEAVY CPU LOAD/ HEAVY INTERRUPTING - SO, BE VERY CAREFUL
WITH MULTITASKING OR YOUR SYSTEM MAY CRASH.
IF YOU PLAY SOUNDS AT HIGHER RATES THAN 28KHZ YOU DO IT AT YOUR OWN
RISK, AS THIS DMA MODE IS NOT OFFICIALLY DOCUMENTED.
--------------------------------------------------------------
to run Symphonie Jr/Pro Demo you NEED:
1. OS3.0 or higher
2. CPU 68EC020-060 (no FPU needed(yet), no MMU needed)
3. reqtools.library
(4. Symphonie Jr: 4 MB Fastmem, Symphonie Pro: 8-16 MB Fastmem recommended)
(Symphonie Pro needs double the memory for Samples, due to 16 Bit handling)

DJs may ask for special live performance versions
being developed on demand.
(eg. multispeaker versions, netsymphonie, special sync versions)
--------------------------------------------------------------
If you also think that Symphonie is a breakthrough in Amiga soundquality
think about this: Symphonie would also run on a A1000 of 1986 if I didn't
use the expanded 020 assembler instructions, because the paula chip producing
the sound has never changed since then.
